Delco Roundup: Saccomandi’s OT goal boosts Garnet Valley

In a battle of field hockey contenders in District 1 Class 4A, Nicolette Saccomandi had the final say Saturday.

Saccomandi tipped home a feed from Kayla Snyder in overtime to send Garnet Valley to a 2-1 nonleague win over Kennett.

Alyssa Smith had drawn first blood for the Jaguars, but Jordyn MacMillan restored parity for Kennett. Riley Gallagher assisted on Smith’s opener for Garnet Valley (14-2).

In other nonleague action:

Sacred Heart 9, Academy Park 0 >> Kathryn Gallagher scored a hat trick to lead the Lions to a rout.

Kyra Santora and Keira Hogan scored twice each, and Helen White and Caroline White added fourth-quarter markers.

W.C. East 5, Interboro 0 >> Mackena Harley made 16 saves in goal, but Carey Werley and Anna Argonish scored twice each for the Vikings.

Springfield 3, Sun Valley 0 >> Karli Henderson, Addison Markunas and Sophia DiMarcantonio scored to lead the Cougars to a victory. Morgan Hannigan and Hanna Hoban supplied assists.

Boys Soccer

Justin DiBona scored the only goal as Marple Newtown bested Holy Ghost Prep, 1-0. Dimitrios Botos assisted on the goal.

In other nonleague action:

Strath Haven 6, Penn Wood 2 >> Jake Hopper recorded a hat trick, and Jamie Lenart paired a goal with an assist in a game Friday night. Nick Dignazio dished two assists. Beckett Young and Paul Semos also scored.

Girls Volleyball

Liz Kurcon put away 17 kills and Penncrest did dogged defensive work, but couldn’t stop Sun Valley in dropping three tight sets for a 3-0 loss.

Kurcon added 23 digs for an impressive double-double. Chloe Breeze came up with 25 digs, and Kay Wimberly added 18 digs to her 28 assists. Kelly McDonnell added eight kills, 16 digs and two blocks, the same block total as Fiona O’Loughlin (four aces).

Sun Valley won by game scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-23. Katie Kuehl led the attack with 11 kills. Laura Stritzinger paired seven kills with five blocks, Jenna Jones (17) and Kate McGroarty (15) paired for 32 assists, and Kylie Shetter came up with 20 digs.

Girls Soccer

Ava Hnelrski turned aside four shots as Cardinal O’Hara blanked Interboro, 5-0.

Kelly McCarthy, Violette Meehan, Lauren Moore, Carly Coleman and Alyssa Michael scored the goals for the Lions. Sarah Kerr made nine saves for the Bucs.

Upper Darby 4, Bonner-Prendergast 0 >> Gwen Luther and Aubrey Patterson provided a goal and an assist each, and Moira Penot kept a clean sheet with six saves for the Royals.

Patterson’s fellow freshman Amelia Constantine also scored, as did sophomore Madison Campbell.
